Original Scarce Smith Carbine sn 3712 regimentally ID’d to Co. H, 2nd WV Volunteer Cavalry per Springfield research. Manufactured by America Machine Works of Springfield, MA and marketed under the “Address Poultney & Trimble, Baltimore U.S.A.” stamp, Patent date “June 23, 1857” clearly struck into frame. Crisp, legible marking on both sides of the frame including the manufacturer’s address panel and patent date. Inspector “H” & sub-inspector cartouches “J.T. on the stock wrist. Barrel shows L.P.R inspector’s stamp near the breech. Blued/case-hardened finish toned to soft plum-brown and gray typical of age. Walnut stock & forend smooth, honest patina.
